Cupping Q&A

What is cupping?

Cupping is an ancient treatment commonly used to ease discomfort and enhance natural body functions. It involves placing cups on your skin to create suction and improve blood flow. Cupping provides numerous benefits for your health, particularly for pain reduction. It works by stimulating your body’s natural healing processes.

What are the benefits of cupping?

The advantages of cupping at Total Acupuncture and Physical Therapy include:

  • Less pain
  • Faster healing
  • Improved musculoskeletal function
  • Cleared pores
  • Reduced body toxins
  • Lower risk of future pain and injury

Cupping can enhance the way your body feels and functions without invasive procedures or downtime.

What is cupping used for?

Cupping helps eliminate:

  • Ongoing discomfort
  • Sports injury pain
  • Post-surgery discomfort
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Knee discomfort
  • Ankle pain
  • Shoulder discomfort
  • Elbow pain
  • Wrist pain
  • Arthritis
  • Disability
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Headaches

Your specialist may combine cupping with additional holistic solutions to ensure outstanding and long-lasting results.

What should I expect during cupping?

During cupping treatments, you rest comfortably on a treatment table. Your provider will use clean glass or plastic cups to suction specific areas of your skin while you relax.

They leave the cups in place for a specified period and might move them slightly to massage and stretch the area. Your specialist may also use a needle to lightly puncture treated skin before or after cupping to enhance toxin removal.

What happens after cupping?

After cupping, you can expect bruise-like marks on your skin that fade during the next week or two. However, there’s no downtime after the procedure, so you can resume your activities immediately. You will begin feeling better during the next few days, weeks, and months, and your specialist lets you know when to schedule your next treatment session.
